Seoul: China's top envoy to South Korea has expressed his condolences following the death of former Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan, acknowledging his significant contributions to strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Chinese Ambassador Dai Bing conveyed his deep condolences and heartfelt sympathy to Lee's bereaved family through a post on X, a platform previously known as Twitter. Dai highlighted Lee's role as a presidential special envoy on two occasions, where he played a crucial part in fostering development in South Korea-China relations.

Lee Hae-chan, who passed away on Sunday during a visit to Vietnam, was a prominent figure in South Korea's pro-democracy movement. His legacy includes enduring torture and imprisonment under authoritarian regimes before rising to serve as a seven-term lawmaker and advising several liberal presidents. Lee's contributions were particularly notable during his service as a special envoy under former presidents Roh Moo-hyun and Moon Jae-in, further solidifying his impact on diplomatic ties with China.
