Cheong Wa Dae Holds Working-Level NSC Meeting on HMM Vessel Explosion Findings

Seoul: Cheong Wa Dae held a working-level meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) on Sunday, the presidential office said, possibly to discuss the outcome of an investigation into the recent explosion and fire on a South Korean-operated vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the NSC meeting was attended by officials from the oceans ministry and other relevant agencies. However, Cheong Wa Dae did not offer any additional information regarding the discussions from the meeting.

An investigation by a seven-member government team has concluded that two unidentified flying objects struck the stern of the vessel operated by South Korean shipper HMM Co., the foreign ministry stated earlier. The ministry is still unclear about who was responsible for the incident and mentioned that further reviews and analysis will soon be conducted.

The ministry also indicated that the country is reviewing its potential participation in international initiatives, including the U.S.-led Maritime Freedom Construct. This review aims to ensure the safety and safe passage of vessels stranded in the crucial waterway due to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.
