Seoul: The presidential office, Cheong Wa Dae, expressed hope for a positive response from North Korea following the United Nations Security Council's (UNSC) decision to exempt sanctions on humanitarian aid projects for Pyongyang. This development comes as part of an effort to address humanitarian needs while navigating the complex political landscape surrounding North Korea.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the UNSC 1718 Committee, responsible for sanctions against North Korea, reached a unanimous agreement on Thursday to permit exemptions for 17 humanitarian projects aimed at aiding the North. This decision was reportedly influenced by discussions between South Korea's Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where the minister sought the Trump administration's support in lifting the objections that had stalled the aid projects.

The United States, a permanent member of the UNSC with veto power, had previously expressed reservations, causing delays in the implementation of these humanitarian initiatives. However, the recent decision marks a significant shift in the approach to providing aid to North Korea.

A Cheong Wa Dae official emphasized the importance of separating humanitarian assistance from political considerations, stating that UNSC sanctions were not designed to restrict humanitarian activities. The official expressed optimism that North Korea would recognize the international community's goodwill and respond positively to efforts aimed at improving the humanitarian situation and fostering peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula.
