‘Baby Shark’ Surpasses 1 Billion Streams on Spotify, a Historic First for Character IP

Seoul: The English version of "Baby Shark," the popular children's song from South Korean educational brand The Pinkfong Company, has surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify, the company announced Friday. This achievement marks the track as the first character intellectual property and children's song to reach such a milestone.

According to Yonhap News Agency, most other tracks that have achieved more than 1 billion streams on the global music streaming platform are hit songs by renowned artists like Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, BTS, and BLACKPINK. "Baby Shark," famous for its catchy "Baby shark, doo doo doo doo doo doo" refrain, is cherished by young audiences worldwide for its simple melody and easy-to-follow chorus.

The associated video, "Baby Shark Dance," has accumulated 16.9 billion views on YouTube, continuing its reign as the most-viewed video on the platform globally for 65 consecutive months. The song amassed 137 million plays on Spotify over the past year, translating to an average of approximately 400,000 daily streams, or nearly five streams per second around the world.

Listeners from countries including the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, the Philippines, Turkey, and Indonesia have contributed to the song's global streaming numbers. "Baby Shark's" balanced consumption across Europe, South America, Asia, and Oceania underscores its worldwide appeal beyond language and borders.

The song previously made its debut at No. 32 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 2019, maintaining its position on the chart for 20 consecutive weeks and peaking at No. 6 on the British Official Singles Chart Top 100. "Baby Shark" has also earned significant certifications, including Diamond from the Recording Industry Association of America, 5x Platinum from the British Phonographic Industry, and Gold from France's National Syndicate of Phonographic Publishing.
