Chongju:According to Yonhap News Agency, the late Lt. Col. Charles Green has been recognized as the Korean War hero of October for his distinguished service during the 1950-53 conflict. Green, who led the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment, played a pivotal role in the early stages of the Korean War after it began on June 25, 1950.
His battalion arrived in Busan, South Korea, in September 1950 as part of the 27th Commonwealth Brigade. Under the U.N. banner, they joined Allied forces to push northward against the Soviet-backed North Korean army. The brigade successfully entered Pyongyang in October after capturing the North Korean cities of Kaesong and Sariwon.
In late October, Green led his battalion to victory in Chongju, North Phyongan Province, significantly aiding the Allied advance. However, he was critically wounded during these operations and died in November 1950 at the age of 30.
The veterans ministry noted Green's leadership in transforming his unit into an effective fighting force and praised his clear and decisive command. In 2019, he was posthumously awarded the Eulji Order of Military Merit for his service and sacrifice.
