Assembly Speaker Calls for Diplomatic Efforts for Safe Return of South Korean Vessels from Hormuz Strait

Seoul: National Assembly Speaker Cho Jeong-sik called for all-out diplomatic measures Friday to ensure the safe return of South Korean vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, following a ceasefire deal reached between the United States and Iran earlier this week. Cho made the call in a meeting at his office with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, emphasizing the need for prompt action.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Cho highlighted that the war in the Middle East has come to a halt after 106 days, creating an opportunity for diplomatic efforts. He urged the foreign minister to ensure the safe return of the 24 vessels and their crew members stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. These vessels have been stuck in the vital waterway due to halted commercial shipping amid threats of missile and drone attacks.

Cho also emphasized the importance of protecting South Korea's national interests during the follow-up measures after a formal end to the war is declared. He reassured that the National Assembly would actively support the country's diplomatic initiatives centered on national interests.

The South Korean foreign ministry announced on Tuesday that the government has initiated consultations with the U.S., Iran, and other relevant countries to facilitate navigation through the strait. The situation remains critical as efforts continue to ensure the safe passage of affected vessels.
