Army to Establish New Security Brigades for Border Surveillance

Accra:The Army is set to form new security brigades tasked with surveillance operations near the inter-Korean border, under a defense reform plan. These brigades will be placed under the command of corps to allow front-line units to concentrate on guard duties.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the current system involves brigades in border areas assigning their battalions to perform surveillance at general outposts along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas. The new security brigades will solely oversee these tasks, alleviating the burden on front-line brigades which manage Forward Edge of Battle Area (FEBA) units responsible for training and combat readiness.

The Army's strategy includes initially deploying security units under the 5th and 22nd Infantry Divisions by October 2027, with plans to expand them into fully dedicated brigades under corps command. This initiative is part of a broader reform to enhance surveillance capabilities using artificial intelligence-driven systems by 2040.

The Army aims to complete the development of an AI-driven surveillance system for border areas by 2028 and establish it operationally by 2033.
