Appellate Court Reduces Sentence for Former Presidential Security Chief to Three Years

Seoul:Park Jong-joon, the former chief of the Presidential Security Service (PSS), received a three-year prison sentence from an appellate court on Wednesday. The sentencing relates to his role in obstructing investigators from executing a warrant to detain former President Yoon Suk Yeol last year.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the appellate court's decision reduced Park's sentence from the four-year term initially handed down by a lower court in July. The court noted that Park did not appear to have engaged actively in physical confrontations with officials attempting to execute the arrest warrant. Additionally, Park's resignation on January 7 of the previous year was considered as a possible acknowledgment of his responsibility for the confusion and conflict that ensued.

The court maintained a five-year prison sentence for Kim Seong-hoon, the former deputy chief of the PSS, citing his significant involvement in organizing resistance to the warrant's execution. Lee Kwang-woo, the former chief of the PSS's bodyguard division, was sentenced to two years in prison, while Kim Shin, a former PSS official responsible for the president's family's security, received a one-year suspended prison term.
