Seoul: An appellate trial for former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo began Wednesday on charges related to his involvement in an insurrection led by former President Yoon Suk Yeol in 2024, which involved the imposition of martial law.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the first hearing took place at the Seoul High Court following appeals by both Han and the special counsel Cho Eun-suk's team against a 23-year prison sentence issued by a district court in January. Han was convicted of participating in the insurrection by suggesting that Yoon convene a Cabinet meeting before declaring martial law on December 3, 2024.

Han was also found guilty of signing a revised proclamation after the martial law decree was lifted six hours later to legitimize the action and was accused of lying under oath at the Constitutional Court. Following the ruling, Han has been held at a detention center in Uiwang, south of Seoul, where Yoon has been detained since last July.

The court announced that the morning session of Wednesday's hearing would be broadcast using court equipment at the special counsel team's request. A decision on whether to allow broadcasting of the afternoon session is pending.
