Alumni Groups Rally Against Government’s Military Academy Unification Plan

Seoul: Alumni associations from the Army, Navy, and Air Force academies have collectively urged the government to "immediately" abandon its proposal to integrate the academies of the three military branches. The groups gathered for a rally outside the National Assembly, arguing that the government is "hastily" advancing the integration plan without conducting an objective review or facilitating sufficient public debate.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Lee Jae Myung administration is aiming to unify the military academies into a single institution. This initiative, part of a broader strategy to consolidate talented future cadets amid a demographic decline, seeks to enhance the military's responsiveness to evolving warfare. However, the proposal for the "National Military Academy" has met with significant resistance from within the armed forces, which assert that each branch necessitates specialized training tailored to its unique operational needs.

The alumni groups have also requested that the government reconsider its plan to move the Korea Military Academy from its current location in northern Seoul to Jangseong County in South Jeolla Province. The groups emphasized that their objections are not motivated by self-interest but are rooted in concerns for national security and the future effectiveness of the armed forces.
