South korea: South Korea's media watchdog has officially designated eight prominent platform operators as subject to new responsibilities aimed at curbing the spread of false or manipulated information, following a significant revision to the Network Act.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korea Media Communications Commission announced in a briefing that the operators have been notified of their new designation. This list includes domestic giants such as Naver Corp. and Kakao Corp., alongside two local online communities. Notably, foreign operators like Google LLC, Meta Platforms Inc., TikTok, and X (formerly known as Twitter) are also required to comply with the updated regulations.
The new designations were announced just a day after the amended Network Act came into effect on Tuesday. The revision mandates that large-scale platform operators, with an average of over one million daily users in the past three months, implement measures to prevent the dissemination of false information and respond to reports regarding such content.
Additionally, these platforms must regularly publish a transparency report detailing their efforts in addressing misinformation. The media watchdog has expressed its intention to review the self-regulatory policies of these designated platforms to ensure compliance with their legal obligations. It also plans to investigate and oversee the actual operations of these platforms to guarantee adherence to the revised act.
