Acting Police Chief Apologizes Amid Gwangju Murder Case Controversy

Gwangju: The acting national police chief, Yoo Jae-seong, issued a formal apology on Friday amidst escalating controversy regarding the alleged mishandling of a high-profile murder investigation by police officials. The case involves concerns over leaked investigative information and potential destruction of evidence by police investigators, drawing significant public criticism.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Commissioner Yoo offered his apology during a meeting with senior police officials, acknowledging the distress caused to the victim's family and expressing regret for the public's disappointment. He emphasized the commitment to holding those accountable, ensuring that any wrongdoing will be addressed through thorough investigation and adherence to legal and regulatory measures.

The controversy surrounds the murder of a 17-year-old female student and an attempted murder of a 17-year-old male student in Gwangju last May. Allegations have surfaced suggesting possible connections between local investigators and the suspect's father, who is a serving police officer in the city. This has intensified public scrutiny and led to an internal investigation at Gwangju's Gwangsan Police Station.

In a recent development, a court approved an arrest warrant for the lead investigator on Wednesday, amid concerns about potential flight risk and destruction of evidence. Commissioner Yoo, who had cut short his visit to the United States for a United Nations summit to address the issue, reiterated his commitment to restoring public trust in the police force.
