86 Protesters Detained for Storming Seoul Court Over Yoon’s Arrest

Seoul: A total of 86 supporters of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol have been apprehended for storming the Seoul Western District Court in protest of Yoon's formal arrest, facing potential legal repercussions.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the incident occurred from Saturday to early Sunday, with protesters arrested for forcibly entering the court premises. The unrest was a reaction to the court's decision to formally arrest Yoon due to his failed martial law attempt. The protesters, part of a 44,000-strong crowd, breached the court by scaling walls, breaking windows, and engaging in confrontations with law enforcement, despite warnings.

The arrested individuals face various charges, from minor offenses like damaging public property-which could lead to up to three years in prison or a fine of 5 million won (US$3,400)-to more severe riot-related charges that could result in a 10-year prison sentence or a 15 million won fine. The incident also saw assaults on journalists from various media outlets.

The Supreme Prosecutors Office condemned the violence and vandalism, labeling them as serious threats to the legal system. They have tasked the Seoul Western District Prosecutors Office with investigating the matter in collaboration with police, who have established a special investigation team.

In related developments, police detained a man attempting to break into the Constitutional Court and two others in the vicinity, though it's unclear if they are Yoon supporters. The court is deliberating Yoon's impeachment status.

Despite the disruptions, the Seoul Western District Court plans to resume normal operations on Monday, with added security measures, including vehicle restrictions and identification checks for visitors.
