180 Military Personnel Identified in Former President Yoon’s Martial Law Attempt

Seoul: The defense ministry has identified approximately 180 military personnel involved in the attempted martial law by former President Yoon Suk Yeol in late 2024, with plans to implement disciplinary actions against them, officials announced Thursday. The identification follows a comprehensive investigation into the incident, which occurred in December 2024.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the ministry conducted a monthslong investigation examining around 860 officers from 24 military commands and units suspected of participating in the martial law imposition. The investigation involved over 100 personnel from the defense ministry, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and various military branches, focusing on their level of involvement, decision-making authority, and specific roles in the martial law attempt.

The investigation confirmed that the defense intelligence command had orchestrated plans to take control of the state-run election watchdog. Additionally, the defense counterintelligence command and the ministry's investigative headquarters were found to have sought to detain key politicians. As a result, three general-level officers and five colonel-level officers have been indicted for their significant roles in the failed martial law attempt.

"Following the announcement, we will firmly strive to rid the dishonor that has tainted the military and rebuild a military for the people," stated Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back. The ministry also intends to carry out further investigations into allegations involving the defense counterintelligence and intelligence commands, whose roles were previously restricted due to confidentiality.
