112 Government Services Back Online After Data Center Fire

Daejeon: A total of 112 online government services have been restored following last week’s fire at the National Information Resources Service (NIRS), a state data management agency. The government announced that as of 12 p.m., the restoration rate was at 17.3 percent, with 112 out of 647 affected services back online.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring services during the extended Chuseok holiday starting Friday. He acknowledged public dissatisfaction with the current restoration progress and outlined efforts to deploy civilian experts and research personnel to expedite recovery. Vice Interior Minister Kim Min-jae stated that officials are working on replacing the uninterruptible power supply system and relocating equipment in the server room where the fire originated.

The government plans to restore 96 systems destroyed in the fire by October 28, relocating them to a data center in Daegu. Reserve funds will be utilized to ensure a swift recovery, with the interior ministry discussing fund allocation with the finance ministry.

Concerns have arisen over significant data losses after the destruction of the G Drive, a government document storage system used by 74 agencies and approximately 191,000 civil servants. Lee Yong-suk, head of the ministry’s digital government innovation office, admitted the absence of an external backup was a mistake and promised to establish a more secure system.

Police have initiated a raid on the NIRS and three companies as part of their investigation into the fire’s cause. The search began at 9 a.m., focusing on potential occupational negligence, following the booking of four individuals, including an on-site manager, in connection with the incident. The fire, which started due to a lithium-ion battery explosion in a server room, was completely extinguished on Saturday.
