Young South Korean Footballer Scores First International Goal

Seoul: As he wrapped up a whirlwind year for the national team, South Korean left back Lee Tae-seok expressed his gratitude for finally putting himself on the score sheet. Lee netted his first international goal for the Taegeuk Warriors, with his 63rd-minute header securing a 1-0 victory over Ghana in a friendly match at Seoul World Cup Stadium.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the 23-year-old, son of former World Cup hero Lee Eul-yong, has established himself as a valuable player under head coach Hong Myung-bo. Lee Tae-seok is recognized for blending offensive instincts with improving defensive skills on the left flank. "This has been a really hectic year, with my transfer and all," Lee commented, referencing his move from Pohang Steelers to Austria Wien in the summer. "I've also been able to earn consistent playing time with the national team. I am really pleased to have scored in our final match of the year."

Lee's goal came from a cross by Lee Kang-in, a player he has known since their participation in a reality program for young football prospects. "I am really honored to be playing with him on the senior national team, after all these years," Lee Tae-seok remarked. "For us to combine for this goal was really cool, and it made this year that much more meaningful to me."

Typically not known for scoring, Lee admitted he was unsure of how to celebrate his goal. "I really didn't know how I should celebrate, so I just ran toward a corner flag," he explained. "I guess it all worked out okay."

Since making his national team debut in November 2024, Lee has accumulated 12 caps and played in all but one of South Korea's matches in 2025. He appears to be a strong candidate for the left back position in next year's World Cup. On preparing for the tournament, Lee stated, "First and foremost, I have to keep playing well for my club and stay healthy. And I want to address some of my shortcomings and make sure I can make the most of my strengths."
