Seoul: President Yoon Suk Yeol will attend the hearing of his impeachment trial at the Constitutional Court on Tuesday, his lawyers said Monday. The court is set to hold its third hearing on the impeachment trial at 2 p.m. on Tuesday to review evidence submitted by the National Assembly related to his short-lived imposition of martial law on December 3.
According to Yonhap News Agency, this appearance marks the first time an impeached president will personally appear at a Constitutional Court trial. Yoon, currently suspended from his duties, did not attend the two previous hearings held earlier this month. He has been detained at the Seoul Detention Center since last Wednesday and was formally arrested on Sunday. Yoon has refused questioning by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials regarding charges of insurrection and abuse of power.
The court has 180 days from the day it received the case on December 14 to decide whether to uphold or reject Yoon's impeachment. If the impeachment is upheld, Yoon will be removed from office, triggering a snap presidential election within 60 days. If the impeachment is dismissed, he will be reinstated.
