Seoul: President Yoon Suk Yeol will attend the hearing of his impeachment trial at the Constitutional Court on Tuesday, as confirmed by his lawyers on Monday. The court is scheduled to conduct the third hearing of the impeachment trial at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, focusing on evidence submitted by the National Assembly concerning his brief imposition of martial law on December 3.

According to Yonhap News Agency, this appearance will mark the first instance of an impeached president personally attending a trial at the Constitutional Court. Yoon's legal team has indicated that he intends to be present at the hearings as frequently as possible. Previously, Yoon, who is currently suspended from his presidential duties, did not attend two earlier hearings this month.

Yoon has been detained at the Seoul Detention Center since last Wednesday and was formally arrested on Sunday. He has refused to participate in questioning by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials regarding charges of insurrection and abuse of power. Yoon has defended his attempt to impose martial law as a necessary action to protect the nation from "anti-state forces" and to uphold the constitutional order.

The Constitutional Court has a timeline of 180 days to reach a decision on whether to uphold or dismiss Yoon's impeachment, starting from when the case was received on December 14. If the impeachment is upheld, Yoon will be removed from office, and a snap presidential election will be held within 60 days. Conversely, if the impeachment is dismissed, Yoon will be reinstated to his position.
