Seoul: President Yoon Suk Yeol held a crucial meeting with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and key figures from the ruling People Power Party (PPP) in the wake of an impeachment motion filed by opposition parties. The meeting, which took place at the presidential office, was aimed at discussing follow-up actions after the opposition's motion was submitted in response to the recently rejected martial law declaration. According to Yonhap News Agency, Prime Minister Han, PPP leader Han Dong-hoon, and floor leader Choo Kyung-ho convened just hours after the impeachment motion was put forward. The motion comes after the National Assembly's rejection of the martial law declaration earlier in the day, signaling mounting political tension. The main opposition Democratic Party, along with five other minor parties, plans to report the motion to a parliamentary plenary session on Thursday, with a vote anticipated as early as Friday. For the impeachment motion to pass, it requires a two-thirds majority in the 300-member Na tional Assembly. This means the opposition will need the support of at least eight PPP lawmakers to succeed. If the motion passes, the Constitutional Court will deliberate on whether President Yoon should be removed from office. During this period, Yoon's constitutional powers would be suspended, and Prime Minister Han, as the second-highest official in the government, would assume the responsibilities of the presidency. The situation remains tense as it is uncertain whether any PPP lawmakers, who previously voted against the martial law declaration, would support the impeachment motion. Despite the opposition's efforts, President Yoon has yet to officially respond to the impeachment proceedings. A senior presidential official, however, defended Yoon's actions, asserting that they were aimed at "protecting the constitutional order against groups determined to destroy" the government and were "in accordance with the Constitution," according to Yonhap News Agency.
