Seoul: Yonsei University announced on Wednesday it has deployed South Korea's first commercial quantum computer to aid in the development of the country's quantum ecosystem. IBM's Quantum System One has been installed at the university's Songdo International Campus Quantum Computing Center, marking the first commercial quantum computer set up in the nation. According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea is now the fifth country to host IBM's utility-scale quantum computer, following the United States, Canada, Germany, and Japan. Yonsei University is the second university worldwide to deploy such a system. The Quantum System One is equipped with a 127-qubit quantum processor, facilitating precise calculations beyond the capabilities of classical computing, and serving as a crucial tool for researchers in fields such as chemistry, physics, and materials science. Yoon Dong-sup, president of Yonsei University, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, "By installing the first IBM Quantum System On e in the Republic of Korea, Yonsei has laid a solid foundation for world-class research and education in quantum computing and advanced biology." The university aims to foster 'quantum literacy' across various industries, anticipating the quantum computing field's growth by more than US$5.5 billion from 2023 to 2030. Cheong Jae-ho, head of Yonsei's quantum computing project team, highlighted the university's goal to build an ecosystem for joint utilization of Korea's first quantum computer, promoting cooperative opportunities. The university plans to inaugurate its Quantum Computing Complex at the Songdo Campus in March.
