Winning KBO Opening Day start ‘an amazing experience’ for Twins pitcher Enns

After winning his very first regular season start in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) on Saturday, Dietrich Enns of the LG Twins had a lot of people to thank. First, it was the sellout crowd of 23,750 at Jamsil Baseball Stadium, most of them Twins fans, for giving Enns an energy boost during his Opening Day start. Then it was his defense making plays when they had to and the lineup that erupted for 11 hits, as the Twins beat the Hanwha Eagles 8-2. "It was an amazing experience," Enns told Yonhap News Agency after holding the Eagles to two runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked two. "The fans from both sides were great, and I could hear the LG fans cheering loud when we were hitting and when we got out of innings," Enns continued. "So that gave me a lot of confidence and a lot of energy the whole time." The Twins signed Enns in December and named him their Opening Day starter during spring training last month. Enns admitted to battling some nerves early on but quickly settl ed down. He let the first two Eagles batters reach in the second inning but escaped unscathed. The Eagles loaded the bases with no out in the fourth, but Enns dug deep and held the opponents to just one run. Enns then retired the final seven batters he faced before the bullpen took care of the rest. "I made some mistakes early on that I would like to have back. But I can't say enough good things about the defense behind me, and the bats today were awesome," Enns said. "It gave me a lot of confidence out there when I was pitching because I knew our bats were doing a good job and the defense behind me would make plays." Enns stole the thunder from his Eagles counterpart, Ryu Hyun-jin. Ryu, who led Major League Baseball in ERA in 2019, made his first KBO regular season start since October 2012. He rejoined his old club in February, and Saturday's outing was hyped up as Ryu's homecoming. The left-hander was disappointing, as he allowed five runs -- three unearned -- on six hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innin gs. Unlike Enns, Ryu didn't get any support from his defense. Enns said he was "excited" for the chance to go up against Ryu. "He's a great pitcher, and he's had a great career," Enn said of the South Korean veteran. "So it's an honor for me to be able to pitch against him and on Opening Day back in Korea for his first start in Korea for a while." Source: Yonhap News Agency
