Seoul: The veterans ministry announced on Monday its plans to host a major campaign next year in honor of independence fighters, marking the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule between 1910 and 1945. The initiative aims to foster a nationwide remembrance and appreciation for the sacrifices and dedication of those who fought for Korea's independence, ensuring that these noble values are passed down to future generations, as stated by Vice Veterans Minister Lee Hee-wan during a policy briefing. According to Yonhap News Agency, the briefing was held to evaluate the key accomplishments of the Yoon Suk Yeol administration in veterans affairs. Vice Minister Lee emphasized the ministry's commitment to introducing a fair and swift compensation system for veterans. The ministry also plans to elevate compensation fees to the highest level for war veterans and establish new national cemeteries for those who have fallen. The veterans ministry, which was previously a government agency, was officially launched as a full-fledged ministry in June 2023. This change reflects Seoul's renewed dedication to commemorating and honoring the individuals who sacrificed for the nation.
