Seoul: The veterans ministry is set to develop comprehensive strategies to tackle flooding issues at national cemeteries that have resulted in damage to urns containing veterans' remains, as stated by a senior ministry official.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Vice Veterans Minister Kang Yun-jin announced the initiative in response to the recent heavy rainfall that has affected the central regions of the country. The torrential rains have led to the deaths of two individuals and forced approximately 1,000 residents to evacuate their homes.

Kang reported that discussions have been held concerning the conditions at 12 national cemeteries nationwide, though no major damage has been observed. The ministry is focused on creating measures that will both honor the fallen veterans and alleviate any distress their families might experience. This includes implementing procedures like measuring precipitation levels and improving the sealing of the urns to prevent moisture entry.

Instances have been noted where urns at some national cemeteries were found damp, pointing to issues with inadequate sealing. These incidents have prompted the ministry to take proactive steps in safeguarding the remains of veterans.
