Unionized Rail Workers Suspend Strike Plan; Train Services Remain Uninterrupted

Seoul: Unionized railway workers have decided to shelve their plan to initiate an indefinite strike, ensuring that train services continued to operate on a normal schedule on Thursday, as per the announcement from the state railway operator.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korea Railroad Corp. reached a tentative agreement with the Korean Railway Workers' Union on Thursday morning. The deal, centered around increasing performance-based bonuses, was concluded just hours before the strike was set to begin. The government has indicated that the finance ministry's steering committee on public institutions will address the issue.

The suspension of the strike alleviates concerns about potential major disruptions in rail services, following the unionized rail workers' vow to commence an indefinite strike starting at 9 a.m. on Thursday. A union official stated, "(We) conducted focused negotiations to minimize inconveniences to the public and decided to suspend the strike."

The union's demands included higher performance bonuses and enhanced safety measures, criticizing the current compensation system, which limits such bonuses to 80 percent of base pay.
