Unification Minister Highlights Importance of U.S.-South Korea Cooperation for U.S.-North Korea Dialogue Resumption

Seoul: Unification Minister Chung Dong-young emphasized the significance of strong South Korea-U.S. cooperation in renewing dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang during his meeting with acting U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Kevin Kim.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Chung pointed out that a "window of opportunity" has emerged for resuming dialogue, following recent summits at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in late October. He mentioned that the period leading up to the scheduled U.S.-China talks in April will be pivotal.

The unification minister stated that South Korea intends to enhance its role as a "pacemaker" to facilitate summit talks between Pyongyang and Washington. He elaborated on Seoul's ongoing efforts to restore inter-Korean relations.

Chung and Kim agreed to maintain close communication and cooperation to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula, grounded in a steadfast alliance, the ministry reported.

In a separate post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the U.S. Embassy in South Korea stated that Kim and Chung discussed shared priorities and reinforced the importance of robust U.S.-South Korea cooperation on key alliance issues.

The meeting on Tuesday occurred amidst speculation that U.S. President Donald Trump's upcoming visit to China in April might be a crucial step in renewing dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang.
