Seoul: Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja, who is on trial for bribery charges linked to former first lady Kim Keon Hee, has been returned to detention after a court dismissed her plea for an extended temporary release due to health issues, as reported by legal sources on Sunday. The Seoul Central District Court refused Han's request on Friday, which led to her being placed back in custody the following day.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Han's initial temporary release was granted by the court on February 11, allowing her to remain free until Saturday. This decision was made after Han appealed for a trial without detention, citing health concerns. During her release, Han reportedly received medical attention following a recent fall. This instance marked Han's second release from detention since her arrest last September, with the court previously permitting her release for eye surgery in November.
A special counsel team charged Han in October with violations of the political fund law and other related offenses. The allegations against her include involvement in providing a luxury necklace and a Chanel bag to the former first lady, among other accusations.
