Unclaimed Financial Assets in South Korea Reach 18.4 Trillion Won in First Half of 2023

Seoul: Unclaimed financial assets have continued to rise over the past few years despite a series of campaigns to recover such assets, data showed Tuesday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, such financial assets were tallied at 18.4 trillion won (US$13.2 billion) as of the end of June, up from 15.9 trillion won as of the end of 2021 and 18 trillion won as of the end of 2023.

Unclaimed financial assets are money at bank accounts held by financial institutions that have been dormant without transaction records by customers for a significant period. Other types of unclaimed financial assets include unpaid insurance benefits and credit card points.

The watchdog said financial institutions are urged to step up efforts to help customers reclaim such assets. In 2023, 2 trillion won worth of unclaimed financial assets were recovered, up from 1.5 trillion won in 2022 and 1.4 trillion won in 2019.
