Washington: The United States will maintain its public advocacy to emphasize the significance of South Korea's democracy, as stated by a senior White House official. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan highlighted the "robust" and "resilient" nature of South Korea's democratic framework during a public address on Wednesday. According to Yonhap News Agency, Sullivan's statement came in response to South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's recent imposition and subsequent retraction of emergency martial law. Sullivan expressed that while the announcement caused concern internationally, including in Washington, it ultimately demonstrated the effective functioning of South Korea's democratic institutions. Sullivan made his remarks at an event organized by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, affirming that the United States plans to continue both public and private engagements with South Korean officials. The aim is to reinforce the ongoing importance of maintaining a resilient democratic system in the Republic of Korea (ROK), which is the official name for South Korea.
