New york: A United Nations committee has adopted two resolutions spearheaded by South Korea, focusing on the military application of artificial intelligence (AI) and on encouraging disarmament and nonproliferation among the youth, as announced by the foreign ministry.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the U.N. General Assembly First Committee, which specializes in disarmament and international security, approved the resolutions during a meeting held in New York. The resolutions are scheduled to be presented at the U.N. General Assembly plenary session in December for final adoption.

The resolution concerning AI in the military, co-led by the Netherlands and adopted for a second consecutive year, emphasizes the need for global cooperation to ensure that international law is adhered to in military uses of AI, aims to minimize the associated risks, and highlights the importance of a multistakeholder approach in these applications.

The second resolution, focusing on youth, disarmament, and nonproliferation, advocates for active youth engagement in relevant discussions and supports education and capacity-building initiatives on these topics.
