Two S. Korean students die in Cambodia after suddenly falling ill
SEOUL/DAEJEON, Two South Korean college students died in Cambodia this week after showing symptoms of illness, Seoul's foreign ministry said Thursday.
They travelled to the country last Sunday to do volunteer work.
They received treatment at a hospital in the capital city of Phnom Penh for various symptoms, including stomachache, dehydration and pneumonia, according to the ministry.
One died at around 2:10 p.m. on Wednesday and the other at around 3 a.m. the next day, it added.
The South Korean Embassy in Cambodia immediately sent a consular official to the hospital and met with relevant officials. It has also requested local police to conduct a swift and thorough probe to determine the exact cause of their deaths.
Their school, Konyang University, said 17 others in the volunteer group, including professors, remain healthy.
The volunteer group participated in an aid program for residents there to build necessary facilities and equipment. They were originally set to come back next Wednesday, but they now are planning on an early return, school officials said.
