Trump Urges Asian Nations to Assist in Keeping Strait of Hormuz Open

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday renewed his calls for South Korea, China, Japan, and other countries to help ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open. The strategic waterway, located off Iran, is a vital corridor for global oil shipping and has recently faced disruptions, raising alarms over potential impacts on global oil prices.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump emphasized the United States' longstanding role in protecting its allies and partners during a meeting with the trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts at the White House. He pointed out that Iran's effective closure of the strait has intensified concerns about the war's effects on oil markets, considering the strait accounts for approximately 20% of the world's oil supply.

Trump stated, "We strongly encourage other nations whose economies depend on this strait far more than ours. We get less than 1 percent of our oil from the strait and some countries get much more." Highlighting the dependency of other nations, he added, "Japan gets 95 percent. China gets 90 percent. Many of the Europeans get quite a bit. South Korea gets 35 percent. So we want them to come and help us with the strait."

The call for collective responsibility comes amid heightened global tensions and underscores the critical importance of the Strait of Hormuz in maintaining stable oil prices and supply chains worldwide.
