Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his country's commitment to safeguarding the Korean Peninsula, emphasizing the strong alliance between the United States and South Korea amidst challenges in the region. Trump conveyed these remarks as part of a message following South Korea's commemoration of the July 27 anniversary of the Korean War armistice.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump has consistently marked July 27 as a national day to honor American troops involved in the 1950-53 Korean War, releasing presidential messages annually during his first term. In his statement, Trump highlighted the ongoing presence of "the evils of communism" in Asia and reiterated the unity of American and South Korean forces through a robust alliance.
Trump's message, which was released by the White House, underscored his administration's foreign policy of "peace through strength" and reinforced the commitment to safeguarding the Korean Peninsula. He also emphasized collaboration for safety, stability, prosperity, and peace.
The Korean War resulted in the deaths of more than 36,000 Americans, with United Nations-allied forces confronting North Korea, supported by the Soviet Union. Trump paid tribute to the patriots who sacrificed their lives for freedom and expressed a vow to rebuild the military, support veterans, and confront tyranny.
Trump also reflected on his historic crossing of the Demilitarized Zone in June 2019 as a sitting U.S. president, where he met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. He mentioned his administration's "maximum pressure campaign" and enforcement of sanctions aimed at negotiating denuclearization with North Korea.
