Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States on his election as the new pope of the Roman Catholic Church on Thursday, highlighting the "great honor" of welcoming the first American pontiff.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1955, Prevost, now named Leo XIV, was elected as the 267th pontiff, succeeding Pope Francis who died on April 21. Prevost spent much of his career as a missionary in South America and led the Vatican's office of bishops.

"Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope," Trump shared on Truth Social. He expressed his anticipation of meeting Pope Leo XIV, calling it a "very meaningful moment."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also extended his congratulations to the newly elected pope. Rubio emphasized the significance of this moment for the Catholic Church, particularly during the 2025 Jubilee Year, which brings renewed hope to over a billion Catholics worldwide. He noted the "sacred and solemn responsibility" that comes with the papacy.

Rubio, along with his wife Jeanette, expressed their prayers for His Holiness, hoping the Holy Spirit grants him wisdom, strength, and grace in guiding the Church. He also mentioned the opportunity for the United States to strengthen its relationship with the Holy See under the leadership of the first American pontiff.
