Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his anticipation for a Supreme Court ruling regarding the legality of his administration's global tariffs, which he believes are crucial for national security and federal revenue. During a press conference, Trump reiterated his defense of the tariffs and acknowledged the potential complexities of a refund process should the court rule against him.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Supreme Court is considering the legality of Trump's use of the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to enforce "reciprocal" tariffs on South Korea and other trading partners. Trump highlighted the financial gains from the tariffs, stating, "We've taken in hundreds of billions of dollars," and expressed concern over the implications of a court loss, noting the difficulty of refunds without economic repercussions.

The high court has yet to issue a ruling, despite expectations for a decision this week. Previously, in August, a federal appeals court determined that the IEEPA tariffs were beyond presidential authority, upholding a prior ruling from May. The administration had reduced reciprocal tariffs on Korean goods from 25 percent to 15 percent, aligning with a trade and investment agreement in which South Korea promised to invest $350 billion in the U.S.

In April, Trump announced plans for reciprocal tariffs, arguing that the lack of "reciprocity" in trade and existing barriers had led to significant U.S. trade deficits, posing threats to national security and the economy. During the press meeting, Trump touted his administration's achievements, including efforts to reduce the federal deficit, curb illegal border crossings, and resolve global conflicts.

He also referenced a trade deal with South Korea and Japan, emphasizing its financial benefits to the U.S. economy. "(The administration) made a deal with South Korea and with Japan that gives us money, the likes of which nobody's ever seen before," Trump stated.
