Trump Announces Upcoming Meeting with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, Reveals Nuclear Arsenal Figures

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un later this year, while stating that North Korea possesses 57 "very powerful" nuclear weapons. This remark, made during a press availability at the White House, marks the first time Trump has cited a specific number regarding North Korea's nuclear arsenal.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump's comments follow a report by The Wall Street Journal indicating his desire for a meeting with Kim, potentially during his next trip to Asia for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China, in November. When asked about the meeting, Trump confirmed his expectations but refrained from providing further details about his plan to reengage with Kim.

Speculation about a renewed diplomatic effort has emerged amid Trump's order to scale back joint military exercises with South Korea, seen as a conciliatory gesture towards North Korea. This move aligns with Trump's past efforts to build personal diplomacy with Kim, resulting in three bilateral meetings during his first term.

Observers suggest that Trump's focus on North Korea may be an attempt to achieve a significant foreign policy success and enhance his image as a peacemaker, particularly with rising energy prices due to the ongoing Iran war and the upcoming U.S. midterm elections. However, questions remain about North Korea's willingness to respond to Trump's overtures, given its strengthening ties with Russia and China.

The announcement coincided with a statement from Kim Yo-jong, Kim Jong-un's sister, criticizing the ongoing Seoul-Washington military exercises. Despite this, she acknowledged the positive personal relationship between Kim and Trump, leaving open the possibility for future engagement.

During the press session, Trump emphasized his good rapport with Kim, describing it as beneficial. He also expressed regret over North Korea's nuclear development, stating it should have never occurred. Trump's revelation of Kim's nuclear arsenal, estimated by experts to be around 60 weapons, marks a departure from previous general references to North Korea as a "nuclear power."

Trump concluded by expressing confidence in his relationship with Kim and the importance of having a "smart" U.S. president to ensure continued stability.
