Mar-a-lago: U.S. President Donald Trump announced that South Korea's Hanwha would collaborate with the U.S. Navy to construct new frigate warships, unveiling plans for a new "Trump-class" of battleships.
According to Yonhap News Agency, this announcement comes as South Korea seeks to enhance its shipbuilding ties with the United States through its major shipbuilders, including Hanwha Ocean Co. Trump highlighted this partnership during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago, noting the Navy's recent introduction of a new class of frigates. These ships are designed to be smaller and more agile, complementing the larger, multi-mission warships in the fleet.
Trump praised Hanwha as a "good company," referring to its decision to invest in the Philadelphia naval shipyard, presumably referencing the company's Philly Shipyard. In August, Hanwha Group declared a US$5 billion investment into the shipyard, part of South Korea's $150 billion commitment to U.S. shipbuilding cooperation under a broader trade agreement with the Trump administration.
During the press conference, Trump also disclosed plans for the U.S. Navy to build two new powerful battleships, which will be part of the envisioned "Golden Fleet."
