Yeongdeok: A fire broke out at a wind turbine in the eastern coastal county of Yeongdeok on Monday, resulting in the deaths of three workers, authorities said. The blaze started at approximately 1:11 p.m. at a turbine situated within a wind power complex in the county, which is located about 240 kilometers southeast of Seoul.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the three employees, who were working for a wind turbine company, were at the site when the fire erupted. Initially, two of the workers were unreachable, but police later confirmed that all three workers had died.
Firefighters are facing challenges in accessing the structure due to the fire not being fully contained. Two out of the three blades of the turbine caught fire and subsequently fell to the ground. In response to the situation, authorities have dispatched 11 helicopters and 148 personnel to combat the blaze, which has also spread to an adjacent hill. Efforts have resulted in approximately 70 percent of the fire being contained.
