Seoul: A taxi driver in his late 70s was placed under emergency arrest on Saturday following a fatal crash in central Seoul that resulted in the death of one person. The arrest came after the driver tested positive for morphine, as confirmed by the police.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the incident occurred when the electric taxi first collided with a car near Jonggak Station around 6 p.m. on Friday. The vehicle then hit a traffic pole at a crosswalk before crashing into another vehicle and ultimately plowing into pedestrians.

Tragically, the crash led to the death of one woman, while nine others sustained injuries. Among the injured were one Indian national and three Indonesian nationals, as reported by authorities.

Police investigations found no evidence of drunk driving; however, a preliminary drug test revealed the presence of morphine in the suspect's system. Authorities have announced plans to request a detailed analysis from the National Forensic Service to further investigate the incident.
