Swiss Foreign Minister Discusses Pyongyang Visit in Seoul After Reopening Diplomatic Office

Seoul:Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis shared insights from his recent visit to Pyongyang with a senior South Korean official in Seoul, as announced by the foreign ministry. Cassis's visit followed the reopening of Switzerland's diplomatic office in North Korea.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Cassis, having just returned from a two-day trip to North Korea, met with Jeong Yeon-du, South Korea's vice foreign minister for strategy and intelligence, over dinner. They discussed the importance of peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

During their meeting, Jeong Yeon-du highlighted Seoul's efforts toward peaceful coexistence with Pyongyang and expressed interest in the reopening of the Swiss office, hoping it would facilitate engagement with North Korea. Cassis had earlier posted on X about his discussions with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui, emphasizing the reopening of the diplomatic office in a new format and the regularization of political relations.

Cassis and Choe also exchanged views on security issues concerning the Korean Peninsula and broader Eurasian challenges. Additionally, Cassis met with South Korea's National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac, agreeing to maintain close communication to promote regional peace and stability.

Switzerland had previously operated a humanitarian office in Pyongyang since 1997, which was not a formal diplomatic mission. The office was closed in 2020 due to COVID-19 lockdown measures.
