Surging Global Bond Yields Pose Economic Challenges for South Korea

Seoul: Surging global bond yields are presenting significant economic challenges for South Korea, as the nation's sovereign debt and borrowing linked to artificial intelligence collide with increasing market pressures. According to Yonhap News Agency, the surge in long-term government bond yields across major economies is more than just a temporary reaction to central-bank policies. This trend is driven by rising sovereign borrowing, unpredictable inflation, and a swelling global bond supply.

Long-term yields in the US, Japan, and European countries have reached multi-year or record highs, with the US 30-year Treasury yield briefly hitting its highest point since 2007. As fiscal policies in these regions expand borrowing needs, investors are demanding greater compensation for holding long-duration bonds. The situation is further complicated by the rapid growth of AI-driven technology companies like Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, and Oracle, which are significantly tapping into credit markets to fund substantial investments in data centers and chip purchases.

The rise in bond yields poses a dual challenge for South Korea. The country's export-driven economy is sensitive to global capital flows, and domestic long-term rates closely follow international market trends. The recent volatility in South Korea's benchmark Kospi index highlights the swift impact of bond market anxieties on equities. Additionally, the nation's household credit reached a new high of 2,019.8 trillion won at the end of June, exacerbating the situation as households face higher borrowing costs.

This financial environment threatens South Korea's chip-export model, as expensive debt could deter infrastructure spending by technology giants, potentially affecting demand for advanced memory components. Policymakers are urged to avoid temporary solutions like liquidity injections or relaxed credit caps, which only offer brief relief. Instead, a strategic approach involving clear spending boundaries and targeted monetary policies is recommended to preserve market confidence and manage inflation expectations.

South Korea's economic resilience depends on proactively addressing these challenges, prioritizing sustainable fiscal and monetary policies that align with the shifting global financial landscape.
