Supreme Court’s Full Bench to Rule on Ex-PM, Ex-Interior Minister’s Insurrection Charges

Seoul: The Supreme Court announced on Wednesday that its full bench will preside over the insurrection trials of former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and former Interior Minister Lee Sang-min, underscoring the significance of these cases.

According to Yonhap News Agency, both Han and Lee have been separately standing trial at the top court. They face charges related to their involvement in the brief imposition of martial law by former President Yoon Suk Yeol in December 2024. The Supreme Court emphasized the high public interest and the necessity for historical judicial judgment in these cases. Consequently, the respective panels requested that the matters be addressed by the full court.

Han received a 15-year prison sentence from an appellate court in May for his participation in Yoon's unsuccessful martial law attempt. Lee, on the other hand, was sentenced to nine years in prison during his appellate trial the same month for his role in the same bid.
