Seoul: The Supreme Court is poised to rule next Thursday on the case of Democratic Party lawmaker Yang Moon-seok, who faces allegations of fraud and election law violations. This ruling could potentially result in Yang losing his seat in the National Assembly, judicial officials reported on Friday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the sentencing hearing is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. and follows a decision by the Suwon High Court in July last year. The high court had upheld a lower court's sentence, imposing 18 months in prison, suspended for three years, for fraud charges. Additionally, Yang was fined 1.5 million won (approximately US$1,015) for breaching the Public Official Election Act.
Should the Supreme Court affirm the appellate court's decision, Yang's parliamentary seat will be forfeited. The law mandates that National Assembly members lose their seats if they receive a finalized fine of at least 1 million won for election law violations.
Yang's charges include securing a fraudulent loan in 2021 and underreporting his apartment's value during candidate registration for the 2024 general elections.
