Seoul: Stock markets are set to open as usual on Wednesday, following the lifting of a short-lived martial law declaration by President Yoon Suk Yeol. This announcement came from the finance ministry, which clarified that the stock market operations would proceed without interruption after an emergency meeting convened by Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok and key economic and financial officials earlier in the day. According to Yonhap News Agency, the decision to resume normal stock market operations was made after the financial markets showed signs of stabilization. The unexpected declaration of emergency martial law had initially led to instability in both the foreign exchange and overseas Korean stock-related markets. However, the situation began to stabilize once the martial law was lifted just hours after its imposition. The ministry confirmed that the benchmark KOSPI and the tech-heavy KOSDAQ markets are scheduled to open at 9 a.m. and close at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The South Korean won experienced sig nificant fluctuations, dropping to as low as 1,441 per dollar during offshore trading hours after the declaration but later recovering slightly to close at 1,415.8 won. During the overnight trading session, the KOSPI 200 futures index suffered a steep decline, falling more than 5 percent before recovering slightly to close with a 1.8 percent loss. In response to these market fluctuations, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok assured investors of the government's commitment to stabilizing the financial and foreign exchange markets, even promising unlimited liquidity if necessary. The finance ministry reiterated its dedication to maintaining market stability, highlighting the existence of a comprehensive governmentwide monitoring system designed to closely track financial market conditions and respond promptly to any developments.
