Seoul: The state audit agency has called upon the main opposition Democratic Party to cease its plans to impeach the agency's chief over controversies tied to the relocation of the presidential office. This appeal comes amidst rising tensions and political maneuvering in the National Assembly. According to Yonhap News Agency, Choi Dal-young, the secretary general of the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI), made this appeal just hours before the Democratic Party was scheduled to present an impeachment motion against BAI Chair Choe Jae-hae. The motion was set to be introduced during a plenary session of the National Assembly, highlighting the urgency of the situation. Choi addressed the media during a briefing at the BAI headquarters, stating, "I understand the main grounds for the impeachment are that the BAI is carrying out targeted inspections of the previous administration while letting off the current administration through its inspections." He emphasized that the agency is conducting its audits of the c urrent administration's work with strict fairness and uniform standards, countering claims of bias. The Democratic Party has been advocating for Choe's impeachment due to what it perceives as issues in the BAI's audit processes. These include alleged irregularities related to the relocation of the presidential office in 2022, a move aligned with President Yoon Suk Yeol's campaign promise. Additionally, the party has criticized Choe for not submitting pertinent documents requested for a parliamentary audit. In a direct plea, Choi urged, "We earnestly plead with you to immediately stop the impeachment attempt against the chair of the Board of Audit and Inspection, who is the chief of a constitutionally independent body." This statement underscores the agency's stance on maintaining its constitutional independence and the gravity of the impeachment attempt it faces.
