Special Counsel Team Investigates Alleged Detention Plans on Yeonpyeong Island

Yeonpyeong island: A special counsel team headed to a border island in the Yellow Sea to inspect a detention facility over allegations related to former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law bid in late 2024. The focus of the investigation is whether preparations were made to detain political figures and others at this facility.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the team planned to visit the Marine Corps facility on Yeonpyeong Island, as allegations largely stem from a notebook belonging to Noh Sang-won, a former head of the Defense Intelligence Command. Noh is accused of being involved in the planning of martial law.

The notebook reportedly contains a list of high-profile detention targets, including now President Lee Jae Myung, and mentions Yeonpyeong Island as a potential detention site. The special counsel team believes these notes were referencing the Marine Corps facility on the island.

This investigation is part of the special counsel team's broader mandate to reopen inquiries into allegations surrounding Yoon, including his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law, which were not fully addressed by previous investigations.
