Seoul: A special counsel team on Friday requested a five-year prison term for former President Yoon Suk Yeol on charges related to the appointment of a former defense minister as ambassador to Australia in 2023.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the special counsel, led by Lee Myeong-hyeon, made the request during the final hearing of Yoon's trial at the Seoul Central District Court. The charges against Yoon include aiding a criminal's flight and abuse of power. He is accused of appointing former Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup as ambassador to Australia in November 2023. The appointment allegedly aimed to help Lee evade an investigation concerning the alleged cover-up of a Marine's death earlier that year.
