Seoul: Special counsel Cho Eun-suk's team was making a third attempt Wednesday to bring in former President Yoon Suk Yeol for questioning over his martial law bid, as two previous attempts failed due to his refusal to cooperate. The team sent instructions the previous day to the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, just south of the capital, to bring Yoon to its interrogation room at the Seoul High Prosecutors Office on Wednesday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Yoon has been held at the detention center since his second arrest last Thursday over charges related to his attempt to impose martial law in December. He has repeatedly ignored the special counsel's summonses to appear for questioning and resisted the team's attempts to bring him in on Monday and Tuesday, citing health issues.

The detention center has reported difficulties in using physical force against Yoon as he is a former president. On Wednesday, the justice ministry said the center sent a letter requesting personnel support from the special counsel team in the form of prosecutors or investigators.

Yoon's continued resistance has led to speculation the special counsel will proceed to indict him without questioning him or extending his arrest. When asked about the possibility Tuesday, assistant special counsel Park Ji-young said, "That's one of various options we are considering."

Yoon's lawyers have criticized the special counsel team for insisting on bringing him in when he could be questioned at the detention center, casting the attempts as "nothing more than an act to publicly humiliate a former president." The team has countered that calling in an arrested suspect for questioning is "completely natural" under the criminal justice system.

Yoon is accused of five key charges, including violating the rights of Cabinet members by calling only a select few to a meeting held shortly before he declared martial law Dec. 3. He is also suspected of creating a false martial law declaration document after Dec. 3 to add legitimacy to his actions, and having it signed by then Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and then Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun before discarding it.

Separately, Yoon is standing trial on insurrection and abuse of power charges in connection with the martial law bid.
