Seoul: A special counsel team has indicted former first lady Kim Keon Hee on charges of corruption and bribery, marking a historic moment as she becomes the first spouse of a former president to stand trial under custody. Kim, the wife of ousted former President Yoon Suk Yeol, faces charges of violating the Capital Market Act, the Political Funds Act, and accepting bribes for mediation. This indictment follows allegations that she was involved in a stock manipulation scheme from 2009-2012 and received free opinion polls ahead of the 2022 presidential election in exchange for political favors.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim allegedly received luxury gifts from the Unification Church through a shaman in exchange for business favors in 2022. Upon the announcement of her indictment, Kim released a statement through her lawyers expressing her intention to engage in the trial process. She conveyed her remorse over the situation and acknowledged the concerns it has raised among the public. Despite the charges, Kim suggested that not all allegations against her are accurate and vowed to carefully examine the claims.

The indictment was filed shortly before the expiration of her pretrial arrest, which has now been extended for up to six months. The special counsel retains the option to seek a new arrest warrant if additional charges are brought forth. Kim was initially arrested on August 12 on charges identical to those in the indictment. Notably, this situation also involves her husband, Yoon Suk Yeol, who is currently jailed and facing trial on insurrection charges.

Since her arrest, Kim has been questioned five times by the special counsel team, although she has predominantly exercised her right to remain silent. The investigation has expanded significantly, involving raids on individuals suspected of providing Kim with jewelry in return for business or personnel favors. The team is tasked with probing a total of 16 criminal allegations against Kim, including accusations related to expressway project alterations and preferential treatment in an apartment construction project.

The ongoing investigation is expected to require further appearances by Kim as the special counsel team seeks to unravel the full extent of the allegations.
