Seoul:A special counsel team has appealed the acquittal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol on charges of committing perjury during the insurrection trial of former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo.

According to Yonhap News Agency, special counsel Cho Eun-suk's team filed the appeal with the Seoul High Court, challenging the decision made six days earlier by an appellate bench that Yoon did not give false testimony. The testimony in question was delivered at a November hearing where Yoon stated that he had intended to hold a Cabinet meeting before declaring martial law on December 3, 2024.

The appellate court's ruling aligned with an earlier decision by a lower court. Cho's team charged Yoon with perjury, claiming he initially summoned only six Cabinet members and later decided to meet the legal quorum for a full Cabinet meeting based on Han's suggestion. They sought a fine of 10 million won (approximately US$7,399) for Yoon.

However, the appellate court sided with Yoon, determining that the evidence indicated he planned to invite additional Cabinet members independently of Han's proposal.
