Speaker asks for China’s support for denuclearization of Korean peninsula
SEOUL, National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang asked for China's continued support for denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula during a meeting with China's top envoy to Seoul on Thursday.
Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Qiu Guohong paid a visit to Moon, who took office in July as the new parliamentary speaker.
"We appreciate China's constructive role in seeking complete denuclearization of the peninsula and a peace regime. I hope for Beijing's continued support," Moon was quoted as saying by his office.
The Chinese envoy said that parliamentary exchanges between Seoul and Beijing will help strengthen the two countries' cooperative partnership and expand more exchanges between the two.
Moon talked about his plan to visit China, saying that it would be meaningful for a Korean speaker to travel to Beijing at a time when efforts to bring peace to the Korean Peninsula are underway.
Moon plans to visit China late next month, but the schedule may change due to factors, including a possible summit between the United States and North Korea.
